A reflow oven is the final step in SMT PCB assembly — it heats the board through a controlled temperature profile, melting the solder paste and forming reliable solder joints. Choose the wrong oven and you will spend hours reworking cold joints, bridges, and tombstoned components. This guide helps you choose right.
The Most Important Spec: Temperature Profile Control
The single most important feature in a reflow oven is the ability to run a proper thermal profile. A reflow profile has four zones:
- Preheat — gradual ramp to activate flux and remove moisture (typically 1–3°C/second)
- Soak — hold at 150–180°C to allow flux to activate fully
- Reflow — peak temperature above liquidus (183°C for lead, 217–220°C for lead-free SAC305)
- Cooling — controlled cool-down to avoid thermal shock
An oven without profile control — just a timer and a temperature knob — will give inconsistent results. Always choose an oven with programmable profile control.
Toaster Oven Conversions vs Dedicated Reflow Ovens
Many hobbyists start with a converted toaster oven running a Reflow Master or similar controller. This works for occasional prototyping but has significant limitations: uneven heating, poor temperature accuracy, and no repeatability. For any serious production use, a dedicated reflow oven designed for PCB assembly is the right choice.
Key Specs to Compare
- Maximum board size — ensure the oven accommodates your largest board
- Temperature accuracy — thermocouple type matters; K-type is standard, MAX6675 or MAX31855 ICs give reliable digital readings
- Heating element type — infrared, convection, or hybrid. Convection gives more even heat distribution
- Controller interface — touchscreen is much easier to use than buttons and a small LCD
- Profile storage — ability to save multiple profiles for different paste types
Lead vs Lead-Free Solder
If you use lead-based solder paste (Sn63/Pb37), peak temperature is 183°C — most ovens handle this easily. Lead-free SAC305 requires peak temperatures of 235–245°C and a tighter profile. Ensure your oven can reliably reach and hold these temperatures.
The SolderStation
The SolderStation is a dedicated benchtop reflow oven designed and manufactured in India by Tejwani Industries. It features an ESP32-S3 controller with an LVGL touchscreen interface, MAX6675 thermocouple for accurate temperature sensing, and SSR-driven heating for smooth power control. It is designed to run both lead and lead-free profiles reliably, and pairs directly with the PlaceStation pick and place machine and StencilStation paste printer for a complete in-house SMT line.
Starting at ₹22,000, it is the most affordable locally-supported reflow oven available in India with full GST invoice.
